Day 01

Reading Guide

Have you ever paid attention to what you think about throughout the day? After scrolling through twitter for the second hour of the day, some of you may find yourself convinced that our country is doomed, your body could use some improvements, and your life is just plain insignificant. For others, it may be a tough breakup that leaves you feeling more lonely than ever. Or perhaps, you’re about to enter a new stage of life and you believe you could not be less prepared than you already are. Everything you do, see, and experience affects the inner dialogue of your mind. If you find so many of your thoughts are trending negative, you’re not alone! According to the National Science Foundation, about 80% of our 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day are negative. Yikes!

Philippians 4:8 says to “fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.” Think about your inner dialogue of just the past few days. If you’re doubting yourself, is what you are saying in your head true? If you’re absolutely annoyed with your family at the moment, are your thoughts towards them honorable? If you’re convinced that you could never become the person you think you should be, are those thoughts right?

It’s so easy to be pulled down into a rabbithole of negative thoughts and emotions. But guys, we are in luck! We have a heavenly father, who speaks TRUTH! God wants to change the way we think. He desires for us to see how his plans for our lives are BIG. He wants to bring peace and purpose and fulfillment to you, because you are his greatest creation. God doesn’t just want to improve the way we think, but transform and change our minds. God’s voice in your life is always going to be true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. When you find yourself going down that rabbit hole of negativity, refocus on what is true:

  1. You are God's masterpiece.

  2. He loved you enough to send His son, Jesus, to die on the cross for you.

  3. His plans for you are good.

Focus on what your thoughts revolve around today. Jot down the top 3 things that have crossed your mind lately. If negative, ask God to alter your perspective. Talk to someone about it.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Philippians 4:8

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Ephesians 2:10

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Romans 12:2
