Many of us have heard the phrase or song “He’s got the whole world in His hands”. Though this is true, since He created the earth, God isn’t limited to being an outside observer. In fact, God can be found anywhere and everywhere. You are in His presence this very second! There has actually never been a moment that God wasn’t near. He is with you, He is listening, and He is eager to spend time with you. When we make the choice to acknowledge this truth daily, it can shift our viewpoint about our lives and our God drastically. So what does it look like to spend quality time with our Father? Well, it looks something like picking up a phone and giving Him a call.
When you pray, God doesn’t expect anything extravagant, scripted, or put together. He sees you as you are and loves you! It may initially seem nerve wracking or intimidating, but in reality it is something that we learn to do as we do it regularly. He always wants to hear from you. Whether you’re feeling confused, joyful, angry, surprised, or any other emotion in the book, God is waiting for you to talk to Him about it.
Even Jesus spent time in prayer, refocusing his mind on who God is and what God was doing in his life. All throughout the Gospel, we can read how Jesus would take time away from serving others and leading his disciples in order to do this. I’m sure it wasn’t always convenient for him, but it was the most important.
Every day, you are given the opportunity to turn to the most wise and incredible guidance ever offered. Whatever it is that you’re going through, He knows and is ready for you to give Him the invitation to walk through it with you. Go to him boldly! Tell Him what is on your mind, what you’re wondering, what you long for. Pour into the relationship as you would with a dear friend. Over the next few days, we will be expanding on what it looks like to pray boldly and how God responds to our prayers.
How can you take 5 minutes out of your day to “pick up the phone” and talk to your Heavenly Father? Jot down your prayers and (even if it feels awkward) say them outloud. Remember He is ready to hear from you! If you’re hesitant to pray, ask Him to shift your thinking and invite Him in!
In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.
This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.
